A Brief History of Stuart, FL

Stuart was originally settled in 1870. A United States Lifesaving Station was established 5 years later in 1875 on Hutchinson Island, near Stuart. The station is currently known as Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The area that is now called Stuart was known as Potsdam from 1893 to 1895. Otto Stypmann, a landowner originally from Potsdam, Germany, gave the town the short-lived name. Otto and his brother Ernest owned the land that would become the Downtown portion of Stuart. This same area would be connected by Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway to Daytona Beach in 1892, and then to Miami 4 years later in 1896.

In 1895 Potsdam would be renamed Stuart in honor of Homer Hine Stuart Jr. Also known as Jack, Homer Hine Stuart Jr. was a local landowner who owned 160 acres of land around the local railway station. Stuart would be officially incorporated in 1914 and then officially chartered in 1925.

Spanning from 1871 until 2005, Stuart had 19 hurricanes pass through it. Some of the most notable hurricanes include Isbell in 1964, Frances and Jeane in 2004, and Wilma in 2005. Stuart is also known as the Sailfish Capital of the World due to the discovery of many sailfish in the Atlantic Ocean off Martin County.
