Sebastian was a fishing village in the 1870s, and it was originally called New Haven, named after Thomas New. The town would be officially renamed St. Sebastian in 1882, and then renamed again to Sebastian before the turn of the century.
The entire National Wildlife Refuge system in America was created in Sebastian in 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt agreed to protect birds and various other bird species on nearby Pelican Island. Paul Kroegel became the first wildlife warden for the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.
