A Brief History of Palm Bay, FL

The earliest names of the Palm Bay area date back to the late 1700s, having the names of Turkey Creek, Elbow Creek and Crane Creek. John Tillman was the first prominent settler of this area in the late 1870s, and he would name a town after himself in Tillman at the mouth of Turkey Creek in 1887. However, in 1925 the town’s residents would change its name to Palm Bay.

Starting in 1922 the residents established agricultural grids that stretched 180 miles long, digging 80 canals to drain 40,000 acres of swamp land just west of Palm Bay for various uses. These canals made it possible to redevelop marsh lands for agricultural purposes. With the help of canals like the Tillman and Hopkins canals farmers planted citrus groves and truck farms with the idea of shipping winter produce by the Florida East Coast Railroad to markets up north.

However, Palm Bay farmers did not have the success they envisioned as the land was left vulnerable to flooding from storms, and habitats for complex ecology would be destroyed. A fire broke out among the dredges in 1926 and a severe hurricane caused significant damage, which resulted in an economic downturn for the area. The Melbourne-Tillman Drainage District would declare bankruptcy.

For three consecutive years from 2003 to 2005 Palm Bay was nominated as an All-America City Award  finalist. In 2014 the $130 million Harris Corporation Technology Center opened on Palm Bay Road.
