A Brief History of Melbourne, FL

The first settlers arrived in Melbourne in 1877, and on December 22, 1888 it would be an officially incorporated village. Formerly known as Crane Creek, Melbourne had its first school built in 1883 which is a permanent exhibit on the Florida Institute of Technology campus. A raging fire destroyed most of Melbourne’s original downtown area in 1919 along Front Street. In 1969 due to a successful vote, Melbourne agreed to merge with neighboring city Eau Gallie to form the modern day Melbourne.

During the period of World War II Melbourne played a significant role in the establishment of Naval and Marine bases along the Atlantic Coast. Newly commissioned Navy and Marine pilots were trained by the Naval Air Station Melbourne from 1942 to 1946. Today most of the land used for these training programs make up the Orlando Melbourne International Airport.

Melbourne is situated along the Indian River Lagoon, which is a grouping of three lagoons named the Indian River, the Banana River, and the Mosquito Lagoon. The Indian River Lagoon overall stretches 156 miles long with a basin size of 2,187.5 square miles.
