A Brief History of Jupiter, FL

Jupiter plays a significant part in American history, dating as far back as 1565 when privateers, pirates, invaders and colonial rivals would use the Jupiter Inlet and its Loxahatchee River estuary to store firewood and water supplies. In 1627 to 1628 the Jupiter Inlet was heavily involved in the 80 Years’ War between the United Provinces of the Netherlands and the Spanish Hapsburg Empire.

There were three separate Seminole Wars during the period of 1818 to 1858. Arguably the most intense of these was the Second Seminole War which spanned from 1835 to 1842. Two Battles of the Loxahatchee were fought in Jupiter in January 1838.

Jupiter is also rich in unique pieces of history, such as the people who took up residence there and events that took place. Captain Charles Henry Coe moved to Jupiter in 1948 at the age of 92. Having lived a long and exciting life as a historian, author, entrepreneur, newspaper man and photographer, Coe  became famous for publishing a book titled “Red Patriots” in 1898, which highlighted the daily activities and struggles of the Seminole Indians. Coe would live in Jupiter from 1948 until his death in 1954.

The Jupiter Police Department once had a “K-9 Lion” for a short period of time. One Sunday morning a lion went loose and was spotted on the 300 block of Indiantown Road, on the South Side of the roadway. The lion turned out to be friendly, but the police soon discovered that the man who was opening an exotic pet shop in the area did not carry the required exotic license to have pets like lions. As a result, the pet store owner was arrested for violating exotic license law.
