A Brief History of Broward County, FL
Originally intended to be named Everglades County, Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Ion Farris amended a bill that would officially name the county after fellow politician Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. The founding of Broward County was made official on April 30, 1915. Broward, a river pilot and captain as well as a politician, was the Governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. He supported Florida Everglades drainage and campaigned to turn the Everglades into a useful land.
The peak of the Florida land boom occurred in 1925 when the cities of Davie, Deerfield, Floranada, and Hollywood were all incorporated. However, the very next year in 1926 saw the Great Miami Hurricane cause economic depression in Broward County. In 1929, the Merle Fogg Airport was opened, and it is now the site of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Gulfstream Park, a racetrack, casino, and shopping mall in Hallandale opened in 1939.
Significant governmental moves were made in the mid 1970s as the Broward County government’s structure was signed into law, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida incorporated as a governing entity in 1975. Broward County experienced its first recorded instance of snowfall on January 19, 1977. All of South Florida, including Homestead and Miami Beach, could see chunks of snow falling. The 1980 US Census reported over 1 million people living in Broward County.
Ordinance #2014-32 was enacted on September 23, 2014, which revised historic preservation regulations to be consistent with both state and federal requirements. A new Historic Preservation Board was created for Broward County due to this ordinance.
