A Brief History of Boynton Beach, FL
Two years before Henry Flagler began building his railroad, the Florida East Coast Railway, in 1894 Nathan Boynton, an American Civil War major, visited a land that would eventually bear his name. Boynton purchased land along a beachfront that had belonged to Congressman William S. Linton, and built a wooden two-story hotel named The Boynton. It would be later renamed the Boynton Beach Hotel. This hotel lasted until 1925, 14 years after Nathan Boynton’s death.
On September 26, 1898 Boynton Beach was founded by Fred S. Dewey and his wife Byrd Spilman Dewey when they filed the original plat in the Dade County courthouse for what was initially called the “Town of Boynton”. That name stuck when the town was incorporated in 1920. The Town of Boynton’s community split into multiple communities in 1931 when one community started calling itself “Boynton Beach”. That community became Ocean Ridge in 1939, while the Town of Boynton conveniently became Boynton Beach in 1941.
The Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center has a vibrant history of its own. Originally called the Boynton School, it was built in 1913 to replace a wooden one-room schoolhouse. In 1926 the Boynton High School building was constructed next door, and it opened the following year in 1927. This caused the original school to be renamed the Boynton Elementary School. For many decades both schools enjoyed educational success in preparing students for their futures. The Boynton Elementary School closed in 1990, but the building continued to be used for various community programs. It would be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, and the title of its property would be transferred from the Palm Beach County School Board to the City of Boynton Beach, In 2001 the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center officially opened.
In 1921, the Town of Boynton acquired beach land from Lewis S. Howe by eminent domain which would become Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park. Located just north of the original Boynton Beach Hotel site, this park has remained popular with both residents and tourists alike. A beach casino was built in this park in 1928 which would feature a large dining hall, locker rooms and showers. This casino would occasionally host parties and social gatherings for residents. The casino would be demolished in 1967.
